ETH Zurich custom DVR System improvements

IO Industries Inc.has been helping ETH Zurich with their research on Calanoid copepods for over a decade.

(London, ON) March 24, 2016 - The Environmental Fluid Dynamics Group at ETH Zurich is continuing their research with Calanoid copepods by using a 3D imaging system that measures velocity,  velocity gradients, as well as behavioral response of copepods. The high-speed imaging system consists of four frame grabber cameras, two of IO industries Core 2 DVRs and our software program CoreView.

At ETH Zurich, the lab is investigating the kinematics and diffusive properties of copepod motion (the velocity, acceleration and the geometry of their trajectories) Which will help  understand how these organisms perform in turbulence, which is common in their environment. The investigation is to recognize how the large-scale population can arise from individual motion at a scale of a few centimeters, which is challenging with the large number of particles moving simultaneously. The lab is currently researching the response of planktonic copepods to the instantaneous features of the flow around them. The goal is to understand how the copepods react to regions of high shear stress and the vortices in the flow. IO Industries Core 2 DVRs can record the motion of the copepods and inert tracer particles, this  helps with the investigation of the instantaneous flow field around the copepods.

Dr. Francois-Gael Michalec, who is a postdoctoral researcher at the Environmental Fluid Dymanic Group of ETH Zurich, has been working with this system for more than a decade. IO Industries had originally customized a system that included forty eight hard-disks which worked with four frame grabbers to deliver information directly to the hard-disks.

After a decade of using the system of fiber channel hard-disks the system became prone to errors and changing the disks was not possible due to the unavailability of replacements. The system was bulky and difficult to carry around the laboratory, especially with the many cables and ports that became loose over time. IO Industries put together a new system that included two Core 2 DVRs and our software CoreView, both the software and hardware was fully compatible with the Mikrotron cameras that Dr. Francois-Gael Michalec was using in his research. With the new system an upgrade from external hard drives with a USB 2.0 interface to a modern computer equipped with USB 3.0 or eSATA interfaces allowed for faster transfer rates between the Core 2 and the external hard drive.
